Thunder Fall to West Virginia in Final Game

(Trenton, NJ) – The Thunder fell short of winning their third straight series to start the season, losing 11-6 in the rubber match vs West Virginia Sunday afternoon. For the third straight game Trenton fell behind first, this time in the third inning when the Black Bears scored three runs on two hits and an error. Errors would prove to be a common theme for the Thunder defense, as they would finish with four for the afternoon.

Your Thunder battled back in their half of the fourth. After a one out walk from Trey Paige, Anthony Calarco roped a single into right field to put runners on the corners for catcher Brian Skettini. Skettini drove in the first run to bring Paige home. Couper Cornblum started a two-out rally for Trenton with an RBI single to shallow right field that scored Calarco to make it 3-2. Charlie Pagliarini would drive in a run on a bloop single to left field, scoring Skettini, and tying the game at three. Alden Mathes drove in two more on an RBI single to score Pagliarini and Cornblum. Colton Becker would cap off the six-run inning with his RBI single to plate Brendan O’Donnell.

In the fifth, the Black Bears got one back when Tevin Tucker led off the inning with a single, then proceeded to steal two bases and score on a JH Bobo ground out to short. The Black Bears capitalized and regained the lead later in the seventh inning, scoring three more runs on only 2 hits and another Thunder error. They would score four more in their half of the ninth and wouldn’t need more than that sitting on an 11-6 lead with three outs to go.

For West Virginia, they scored their 11 runs on 12 hits and made no errors in the field. Your Thunder scored all six runs in the fourth and would strand nine total for the afternoon. Taking home Hyatt Regency Princeton Thunder Player of the Game honors was Alden Mathes who was 2-3 with two RBI two walks and a stolen base.
