Employment and Internship Opportunities

Welcome to the West Virginia Black Bears! Our mission is to provide an affordable, safe, fun and memorable time at Monongalia County Ballpark to all Black Bears fans.

Located in Granville, West Virginia, Monongalia County Ballpark is home to the West Virginia Black Bears. Monongalia County Ballpark, which has 2,500-seats, opened in 2015, and received the 16th Annual Ballpark of the Year Award from baseballparks.com in 2015, given to the best new or substantially rebuilt ballpark each year.

In 2015, the West Virginia Black Bears became the first minor league baseball team in Morgantown as an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since 2021, the Black Bears have been members of the MLB Draft League, a showcase league for draft-eligible players.

The Black Bears front office is run by General Manager Leighann Sainato. The Black Bears will soon be offering several internships available to individuals interested in working in the front office.

Our number one goal has always been to provide the fans at Monongalia County Ballpark with a fun, safe, and memorable experience. To achieve this goal, our employees must be reliable, dependable, professional, and well-mannered. Ticketing

Ticket office interns will be responsible for handling and promoting ticket sales during the year. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing assistance during season ticket holder events and implementing season ticket holder benefits, such as the annual season ticketholder party
  • Selling and renewing season tickets and engaging in promotions for them
  • Selling suites and group tickets, as well as ticket packages
  • Assisting with day-to-day operations of ticket office and general office duties (answering phones, taking messages, interacting with customers, etc.)
  • Assisting with non-gameday events like festivals, music concerts, etc.
  • Operating in the ticket office or will-call office prior to and during events

Merchandising

Merchandising interns are responsible for working in the WV Black Bears team store during normal team store hours (10am - 3pm), during Black Bears games and during West Virginia University baseball games. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Working/selling items in the Bears Den team store, making sales and assisting customers who come into the store 
  • Keeping inventory records accurate and up-to-date
  • Processing/tracking/mailing online orders sent to the Black Bears online store
  • Working with marketing interns to ensure proper promotion of sales
  • Assisting when needed with in-store operations during gameday and non-gameday events

Prior sales experience preferred

Facilities & Operations

Facilities interns are responsible for assisting the Facilities Manager in day-to-day operations of the field and surrounding areas of the ballpark. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Cleaning dugouts
  • Working on/tamping mounds and grooming the field/bullpen
  • Setup of concourse areas for gameday and non-gameday events (tables, chairs, tents, etc.)
  • Completing minor stadium repairs under the Facilities Manager's guidance
  • Landscaping area around the stadium, including grass cutting, weed whacking, etc.
  • Setting up/tearing down batting practice and related equipment

All facilities interns are required to work WVU Baseball games during the fall and spring semesters.

Equipment interns are responsible for assisting the Clubhouse Manager in his daily duties overseeing the WV Black Bears clubhouse and equipment. Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Managing the equipment and equipment room for the team
  • Keeping inventory of equipment, uniforms, caps, etc.
  • Setting up and breaking down facility activities, including batting practice, game days, etc.
  • Laundering home and away team uniforms
  • Recording notes on all damaged equipment and uniforms
  • Keeping records of player and coach pass lists for home and away teams
  • Working in cooperation with opposing teams' staff during home stands
  • Keeping records of all shipments received for the team and individual players/coaches 
  • Assisting the Clubhouse Manager in any and all duties

Must have a valid driver's license

Must be able to list at least 20 lbs.

The operations intern will report directly to the PR Manager, who oversees in-house player operations. Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Tracking player statistics
  • Recording all roster moves and reporting them to the NYPenn League
  • Aiding in elements of player housing and organizing player transportation
  • Taking video
  • Aiding in event management and community relations involving the team
  • Helping Clubhouse Manager and support staff in their duties as necessary
  • Recording per diem payments to the team for travel
  • Assisting the Pittsburgh Pirates video coordinator/player development coordinator in their duties

Must have a working knowledge of baseball

Must have the ability to multi-task and work independently toward goals

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office

Must be able to lift 15 lbs.

Marketing & Promotions

Marketing interns are responsible for executing on-field/between inning promotions, external events that require Black Bear representation, and other various tasks related to the marketing efforts of the organization. Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist in the execution of between inning promotions
  • Assist in the planning and execution of promotional nights
  • Appearing at scheduled events to increase the organization's visibility
  • When the occasion arises, appearing as one of the mascots (pepperoni rolls or Cooper the Black Bear)
  • Maintaining a positive attitude during events as a formal representative of the organization
  • Executing promotions and marketing specific events to the target market within the Greater Morgantown area by handing out flyers, making phone calls, etc.

The Sponsorship intern is responsible for overseeing various sponsorship accounts, interacting with sponsors, and executing sponsor benefits. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Staying in touch with sponsors via phone or email
  • Executing sponsorship benefits, like delivering tickets, staying updated on progress of signage, etc.
  • Maintaining a friendly relationship with sponsors and representatives
  • Working under the Sponsorships and Promotions Manager to bring in new sponsors, sign agreements, and receive payment
  • Assisting with game day duties as needed (between inning promotions, exit handouts, etc.)

The On-Field Host acts as the public face of the organization during game days. Hosts will act as the primary emcee for in-game promotions and on-field activities, as well as aid in coordinating pre-game ceremonies. Hosts will work closely with the Sponsorship and Promotions Manager to ensure the highest level of in-game entertainment. Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Attending all 38 home games and post season games (as necessary)
  • Serving as emcee onfield and during in-game promotions, leading promotional games and reads
  • Coordinating pregame ceremonies including national anthem singers, ceremonial first pitch, on-field recognition, etc.
  • Writing game scripts with the Sponsorship and Promotions Manager
  • Assisting in all aspects of pregame operations
  • Aiding with player and mascot appearances as necessary

Experience hosting/being on live camera is preferred (not required)

Public Relations

Media relations interns are responsible for creating media content, including press releases, website content, and social media posts. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Creating, organizing, and distributing media credentials and relations on gamedays and assisting with postgame interviews
  • Posting quality content to the Black Bears' social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with the intent to increase relevancy and viewership in fans
  • Writing press releases for games and non-gameday events that will be released on the website and to the media
  • Assisting with communication among other teams in the league, MiLB media personnel, and local news teams
  • Performing copyedits and proofreading press releases and stories before publication
  • Creating content for the website and updating it regularly, including design

Must be versed in AP style format/publication

Social media interns are responsible for ensuring original, quality content is posted to the Black Bears' social media accounts. This requires daily updates, and the ability to keep all accounts relevant throughout the year. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Posting for all social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
  • Having a general knowledge and understanding of baseball
  • Experience running a social media account

Broadcasting interns are responsible for setting up and operating the WV Black Bears live radio broadcasts of all 40 home games. Interns are expected to be the primary play-by-play announcers, as well as the hosts of the Black Bears pre-game and post-game shows.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Setting up and operating broadcasting equipment pregame
  • Providing play-by-play announcements and in-game commentary for all 38 home games at Monongalia County Ballpark
  • Recording interviews with players, coaches and staff
  • Reading ad copies on-air as provided by Sponsorship and Promotions Manager and/or PR Manager
  • Working with video coordinator and MLB Draft League/Pixellot to sync radio and video broadcasts
  • Attending relevant media events for the Black Bears

Must have prior experience in radio broadcast

Must have excellent knowledge of baseball, including statistics, positions and plays and a working knowledge of baseball broadcasts

Must be able to work all 40 home games

Photography interns are responsible for taking game day action photos for press releases and social media, as well as photos of non-game day events, media appearances, and other related events. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Transporting/setting up/operating photography equipment (provided by organization)
  • Taking action photos during games for press releases and social media
  • Capturing fan photographs for publication

Media/Fine Arts majors preferred

Must have prior working experience

Experience working for a sports team is preferred, but not required

Must be willing to work flexible hours

Videography interns are responsible for shooting, editing, and performing the bulk of the technical tasks related to production/post-production of video format. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Transporting/setting up/operating video equipment
  • Assisting with the staging/preparation of events being filmed
  • Working with PR Manager, Leighann Sainato, in editing content from concept to post-production
  • Assisting in developing content for video, including interviews, candid footage, filming events, etc.
  • Working with marketing/social media/media relations interns to promote footage

Advertising interns will work directly with public relations manager, creating ad copies, grapihcs and video posts for social media campaigns, billboards, advertisements, etc. Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Designing ad campaigns for advertisements that run in five different counties
  • Tracking digital campaigns and analyzing the data for the organization
  • Overseeing individual campaigns for merchandise, community events, etc. 
  • Creating graphics and ad copies 
  • Managing partners' advertising accounts

PR/Strategic Comm. majors PREFERRED

Community relations interns will work closely with marketing to plan, organize and execute non-gameday events, as well as coordinate community outreach and volunteer opportunities. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Tracking and sending donation requests to charitable organizations
  • Aiding with the planning and execution of non-game day events
  • Participating in community outings meant to engage the surrounding areas
  • Scheduling community service opportunities for the season for athletes
  • Maintaining and tracking spreadsheets on player community service hours
  • Finding and organizing player and coaching housing
  • Organizing and executing the handling of the Host and Adopt-a-Player Programs

Special Events

Special events interns will work closely with marketing and community relations' departments to plan, organize and execute non-gameday events and festivals. Depending on the time of year, duties include (but are not limited to):

Assisting in the creation, organization, and execution of special events
Assisting community relations/marketing in the concept and promotion of each event to increase participation, including handing out flyers, talking to potential customers and patrons during promotional events, etc.
Reaching out to other organizations to work in conjunction with them in planning each event, receiving donations, etc.
Aiding support staff during the event
